ESTERO, FL – Nick Larson’s goal with 3:40 remaining in regulation lifted the South Carolina Stingrays to a 3-2 victory over the Florida Everblades Sunday evening.
After scoreless first period, the Stingrays got on the board at 1:19 of the second on a power play marker by Stephan Vigier on the power play. After some good puck movement by South Carolina, Vigier received the puck at the right wing circle and wristed a shot past Florida goaltender Trevor Cann for the goal.
Vigier struck again at 17:25 of the period, after finishing off a 2-on-1 rush into the zone, to give the Stingrays a 2-0 advantage after 40 minutes of play.
Florida came out on the attack in the third period, and got on the board at 3:52 on the power play. Brandon MacLean raced into the zone and fired a shot that was stopped by Stingrays netminder Allen York. However, the rebound bounced to Geoff Walker in the slot. Walker ripped a wrist shot into the net to score his second goal in as many games.
The Everblades netted the equalizer when another rebound jumped to the left wing circle, and Cameron Burt blistered a slapshot high over the glove of York and into the right corner of the net to put the score at 2-2.
South Carolina quelled the Everblades momentum at 16:30. Nick Larson broke into the zone on the left wing side and was shadowed by an Everblades defender. Larson angled to just below the circle and fired a shot from a difficult angle. The seemingly impossible shot clipped the far right corner of the net for the go-ahead marker. Larson’s goal proved to be the eventual game winner.
York earns the win in net stopping 28 of 30 shots, while Cann allows three goals on 21 shots faced. South Carolina takes the season series 5-4.
The loss by the Everblades allowed Greenville and Wheeling to clinch playoff spots. In order to clinch the final playoff spot, the ‘Blades will now have to win their remaining three games, and would need Fort Wayne to lose both of their remaining two games against Evansville and Toledo.
