2012-13 Florida Everblades Season Recap

ESTERO, FL – The Florida Everblades 15th Anniversary season came to a close in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals in Reading.  Despite the loss, the 2012-13 season was an exciting one, and several players had standout years.  The following is a recap of the highlights achieved by this year’s team:

  • The Everblades finished the regular season with 39 wins for the second consecutive season (39-22-4-7, 89pts).  The 89 points matched the Gwinnett Gladiators at the season’s end, but Gwinnett held the tiebreaker to take the South Division crown.
  • Florida reached the ECHL postseason for the 15th consecutive season.
  • The team scored a conference best 260 goals this season, which was the exact same number of goals the team scored last season.
  • The team registered its 600th win on January 30, 2013, with a 5-2 victory against the Trenton Titans.
  • A six-goal first period against Orlando on February 9, tied a team record for most goals in a period (previously set two other times).
  • The Everblades led the ECHL with 18 shorthanded goals.
  • Matthew Pistilli finished with a career high 74 points (25g, 49a), which was fifth best in the ECHL.
  • A goal by A.J. Jenks just 11 seconds into overtime of Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at Elmira, tied an ECHL record for the fastest overtime goal scored in league playoff history.
  • The NHL lockout certainly played a role this year at both the ECHL and AHL levels, as 61 players played in at least one game for the Everblades this season, which included the unique situation of having two NHL defenseman don an Everblades jersey. Ryan O’Byrne (Colorado/Toronto) and Mark Stuart (Winnipeg) made their ECHL debuts this season in Southwest Florida.  O’Byrne posted 11 points in 16 games played with the ‘Blades this season, while Stuart totaled 3pts in nine appearances.
  • 21 Everblades players saw action in the American Hockey League this season.
  • Jared Staal became the 20th Everblades player to reach the National Hockey League.  Staal made his NHL debut for the Carolina Hurricanes on April 25.  Staal went scoreless in two games played with the Hurricanes this season.

Fear the Beard

Roy reached 46 points in just 43 games.  Roy becomes the second Everblades player to lead the league in scoring, as Kevin Baker accomplished this feat during the 2008-09 season(102 pts).

Roy registered his first career hat trick on Feb. 15 at Greenville, only to score his second career hat trick just four days later on Feb. 19 vs. Gwinnett.

Roy also posted a team best 13-game point scoring streak which began on Jan. 27 and ended February 22.  Roy amassed 22 points during that stretch.
