TOLEDO, OH – The Toledo Walleye scored twice in the third period to defeat the Florida Everblades 4-2 at the Huntington Center Sunday evening. Florida’s win streak ends at five. The Everblades finish the seven-game road trip with a 5-2 record, and grabbed 10 of a possible 14 points.
Toledo scored first as Kyle Rodgers directed a pass from the blue line directly to Joey Martin who broke in behind the defense. Martin immediately steered the pass low past Everblades goaltender John Muse for the goal to put the score at 1-0. The goal stood as the only goal scored in the period, as the Walleye to the lead into the first intermission.
Florida countered 2:57 into the second period. Mattt Marquardt fired a wrist shot from the left wing circle which was tipped and redirected by Mathieu Roy past Toledo netminder Jordan Pearce to tie the game at one.
Just 13 seconds later, Toledo broke into the zone on a 2-on-1 rush. Luke Glendenning steered the puck across the low slot to Terry Broadhurst who beat Muse on the backside with a wrist shot to give the Walleye the lead back at 2-1.
The ‘Blades responded halfway through the period on a 2-on-1 rush of their own. David Rutherford sent a pass across the ice to A.J..Jenks who snapped a shot past a diving Pearce to tie the game at two after 40 minutes played.
Max Campbell gave Toledo its third lead of the game at 7:45 of the third. Campbell flipped a wrist shot from the slot which clipped past Muse for the goal putting the score at 3-2.
Nearly five minutes later, the Walleye bolstered the lead on a wrist shot from the right wing circle by Willie Coetzee. Coetzee’s 14th goal of the season, gave Toledo a 4-2 lead. Jordan Pearce turned aside all remaining Everblades shots to preserve the 4-2 victory.
Pearce earns the win stopping 18 of 20 shots, while Muse takes the loss allowing four goals on 34 shots faced.
Florida’s next game is Wednesday, December 19 against the Orlando Solar Bears at Germain Arena . Game time is 7:30 p.m. Fans can skate with Santa following the game. Every Wednesday game features $2 drafts, wines, and hot dogs all night long in the concourse.
