ESTERO, FL- Kevin Lynch scored the go-ahead goal with five minutes left in regulation as the Florida Everblades (35-17-0-2, 72 pts) defeated the South Carolina Stingrays (32-18-4-2, 70 pts) 2-0 Sunday at Germain Arena. With the win, Florida reclaims sole possession of first place in the South Division.
It was a defensive battle for two-thirds of the game as the Everblades and Stingrays were scoreless through.
Florida’s Mark Nemec was assessed a five-minute major for boarding which sent the Stingrays on a crucial power play opportunity. However, the Everblades penalty kill unit fended off the power play attempt to keep the game scoreless.
The Everblades were able to break the scoreless tie with 5:04 to play in the third as Kevin Lynch scored the go-ahead marker.
Kevin Lynch broke into the offensive zone with a burst of speed from the left wing side, moved right toward the net and flipped the puck on the forehand over the shoulder of Mark Dekanich giving the Everblades the 1-0 lead.
With a minute left in the game, the Stingrays pulled Dekanich to gain the extra attacker, but were unable to capitalize as Corey Cowick scored on the empty net and the Everblades take home the 2-0 victory.
Anthony Peters gets the win stopping all 15 shots faced, while Mark Dekanich takes the loss in a solid showing allowing one goal on 22 shots.
GAME NOTES: Forward Mike Aviani returned to the Everblades lineup prior to Sunday's game, and did play against South Carolina.
