KALAMAZOO, MI – Artem Sergeev scored twice to help pace the Everblades to a 3-1 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings at Wings Stadium Wednesday evening.
The Everblades (13-3-0-1, 27pts) stormed out of the gates and grabbed a 3-0 first period lead. The first goal came just 2:12 into the opening frame when defenseman Artem Sergeev hurled a shot from the blue line which cleanly beat Kalamazoo netminder Oscar Dansk for the goal.
Sergeev struck again just three minutes later, firing another shot from the blue line. The result would be the same, as Sergeev’s shot zipped high into the net past Dansk to give Florida a 2-0 lead.
The Everblades added to their lead at 13:07 of the first period when John McInnis shoved home a rebound from a Mike Little shot to put the score at 3-0.
The goal chased Dansk from the game who allowed three goals on seven shots. In fact, all four goaltenders who dressed for the game played in the first period, as Florida’s Allen York left the game with an injury. Daniel Altshuller stepped in for York, while Joel Martin entered the game in relief for the Wings.
Both teams created several quality scoring chances in the middle frame, but both Martin and Altshuller were stellar in goal stopping every shot thrown their direction.
Late in the third, the Everblades got into penalty trouble and faced a 6-on-4 situation with Kalamazoo on the power play and its net empty. Sasha Guimond spoiled the Everblades shutout bid when he delivered a wrist shot form the point which beat Altshuller who was screened in front. The goal was scored at 18:27 of the third period.
The goal would not be enough for the Wings, as Florida held on for the 3-1 victory.
York earns the win despite leaving the game at 8:39 of the first period to an injury. Altshuller stopped 34 of 35 shots in a relief effort, while Dansk takes the loss allowing three goals on seven shots. Martin finished his relief effort with 24 saves on 24 shots faced.
