NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — Jeremy Helvig stopped 27 shots, but the Florida Everblades couldn’t find the back of the net in a 1-0 loss to the South Carolina Stingrays on Friday night at North Charleston Coliseum.BOX SCORE
In the second game of a season-long seven-game road trip, Florida (5-5-2-0, 12 pts.) couldn’t solve South Carolina’s goaltending duo of Adam Morrison and Gordon Defiel, who combined for 29 saves. Morrison turned aside 16 shots before leaving with an injury in the second period, while Defiel made 13 saves to complete the shutout for the Stingrays (8-6-0-0, 16 pts.)
After more than 30 minutes of scoreless play, South Carolina captain Joey Leach finally provided the go-ahead goal on the power play. Working off the left-wing wall, Leach unloaded a slap shot from the left point that beat Helvig under his glove side at the 13:50 mark of the second period.
Florida turned up the pressure in the third period and outshot South Carolina by seven, but Defiel made 10 saves to preserve the shutout. The Everblades limited the Stingrays to three shots on goal in the frame, a new season-low for shots allowed by Florida in one period.
John McCarron had his team-high six-game point streak halted in the loss, and Joe Cox had his individual season-high five-game point streak come to an end.
Halfway through a four-game weekend, the Everblades will head to Duluth, Georgia, for a two-game set against the Atlanta Gladiators on Saturday and Sunday to finish off the first weekend of the road trip. Saturday’s game begins at 7:35 p.m. and Sunday’s game starts at 3:05 p.m.
