NORFOLK, VA – Trevor Mingoia netted a hat trick which included the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the Norfolk Admirals (5-13-1-0, 11 pts) to a 3-2 win over the Florida Everblades (14-2-1-1, 30 pts) Saturday night at the Norfolk Scope. The loss snaps a six-game win streak for the Everblades, but they do earn a point in the standings.

BOX SCORE

Halfway through the first period, the Everblades took advantage of a power play to grab a 1-0 lead. Cycling the puck around inside the attacking zone, Gus Young fired a shot through traffic that hit the stick of Stephen MacAulay, the change of direction proved to be just enough as the puck bounced right past Norfolk goaltender Jamie Murray.

That lead would not last long however as Norfolk would need less than five-minutes to tie the game at 1-1. The Admirals moved quickly into the zone and earned a two-on-one chance. Moving the puck in, Kenton Helgesen flipped the puck across to Trevor Mingoia who made a nice forehand move.  Mingoia fired his shot right behind an off-balanced Callum Booth for the goal.

In the second period, the ‘Blades once again took a one-goal lead, this time off a great team effort inside the attacking zone. After possessing the puck inside the Norfolk zone for a number of minutes, the ‘Blades took advantage. Justin Kea found Nolan LaPorte alone in the slot. LaPorte spun around and ripped his shot into the back of the net.

Norfolk tied the game up at 2-2 as they took advantage of a power play chance midway through the third period. Needing just nine-seconds of power play time to tie the score, Thomas Frazee ripped a shot from the point that was initially saved by Callum Booth. Unfortunately, the rebound became loose inside the crease and was quickly shoved into the net by Trevor Mingoia.

Despite both teams seeing a barrage of scoring chances for the remaining part of the third period, neither the ‘Blades nor the Admirals could find a go-ahead goal. With the score tied at 2-2 as regulation came to an end, the game headed to overtime.

With both teams seeing some excellent scoring chances for the majority of the overtime period, it was only a matter of time before one-team broke the deadlock. Unfortunately for the ‘Blades, that goal would go in the Admirals favor. Trevor Mingoia crossed into the Everblades zone and ripped a shot from right wing circle past Callum Booth, securing the 3-2 victory for Norfolk.

Jamie Murray was excellent in goal for Norfolk, stopping 30 of the 32 shots he faced. Callum Booth also played well in goal for the ‘Blades but does suffer the overtime loss after allowing three goals on 39 shots.
