NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – Andrew Cherniwchan’s goal at 2:39 of the second overtime lifted the South Carolina Stingrays to a 1-0 victory in Game 3 of the South Division Finals at the North Charleston Coliseum on Monday night. The Stingrays now take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series.
The first periods featured a five-minute power play opportunity for the Everblades following a five-minute major penalty assessed to South Carolina’s Trevor Gillies. However, the Stingrays were able to kill off the opportunity and keep the game scoreless at the end of one.
It was much the same in the second as both goaltenders, Parker Milner for the Stingrays, and Alex Nedeljkovic for the Everblades, continued to turn aside shots in the contest to preserve the scoreless tie heading into the third period.
Matt Berry received a breakaway chance in the third period that gave Florida its best opportunity to take the lead. Berry waltzed into the zone and snapped a shot on the glove side that hit off the post and bounced to the boards. Milner’s big save kept the game even and forced overtime.
Both teams exchanged chances in the extra session, including a great chance from the slot from South Carolina’s Joe Devin that was stopped with a pad save by Nedeljkovic. After 80 minutes of play, neither team had found the back of the net to force a second overtime for the second time in the series.
The Everblades threw five shots at Milner in the second overtime, but still could not find the back of the net, which set up the Stingrays game-winner just moments later. After a scramble in front of the Florida net, the puck found itself on the left side of the crease and Andrew Cherniwchan poked the puck into the net for the deciding goal at 2:39 of the second overtime, to give the Stingrays a 1-0 win.
Parker Milner made 38 saves to hear earn his third shutout of the playoffs, with all three coming on Monday games. Nedeljkovic was equally as stellar, but takes the loss allowing one goal on 38 shots faced.
