Recap written by Robert Molnar
ORLANDO, FL – Denver Manderson scored twice while Brock Montgomery also added a goal and an assist to lead the Orlando Solar Bears (11-5-2-0, 24 pts) to a 5-2 win over the Florida Everblades (12-3-1-2, 27 pts) on Friday night at the Amway Center. Following the result, the Everblades and the Solar Bears are now tied at two-points apiece in the race for the Wawa Sunshine Cup.
Hosting their Teddy Bear Toss on Friday night, the Solar Bears sent their capacity crowd into a frenzy as they scored the game’s opening goal just under four-minutes into the contest. Taking advantage of a fallen Everblades player, Taylor Doherty picked up the puck behind the ‘Blades net. Getting the puck back to the front of goal, Brock Montgomery banged home the chance to send the teddy bears flying onto the ice.
Following the opening goal, both teams began to focus on their defensive effort. In fact, the next goal would not come until midway through the second period when Denver Manderson scored on a nice centering feed to double the Solar Bears lead. Slipping in behind the defense, Manderson headed right to the slot where he hammered home a nice centering feed from Brett Findlay.
With the momentum from their previous goal, Orlando wasted no time extending their lead to 3-0 on another nice effort near the Everblades net. Taking the feed at the low circle, Chris Crane moved in towards the net. Snapping a quick shot from the left side of the crease, Crane bent the puck around the body of Anthony Peters and into the net.
Just under a minute later it was Florida’s turn to finally get on the scoreboard thanks to a fantastic shot from Danny New. Moving down the right wing side, New took a feed from Matt Berry. Getting to the faceoff dot at the right wing circle, New blasted the puck straight past Orlando goaltender Ryan Massa, cutting Florida’s deficit to just two.
Entering the third period, Orlando ended any shot of a comeback for the Everblades thanks to Denver Manderson’s second goal of the game. Forcing the puck out of their own zone, Manderson went in alone and managed to beat Anthony Peters on a close range slap shot to give the Solar Bears the 4-1 lead.
Orlando came within seconds of adding a power play goal with Patrick Watling burying his shot past Peters right as the penalty to Michael Kirkpatrick expired. Set up behind the Florida goal, Chris Crane worked with Watling on the give-and-go to get Watling open in the low slot where he knocked in his quick shot.
Adding a consolation goal late in the game, Adam Brace scored his first goal since returning to the Everblades from the Solar Bears earlier this week. Winning the attacking zone faceoff, Michael Kirkpatrick got the puck back to Adam Brace who was at the top of the right wing circle. Snapping a quick shot through the traffic, Brace watched as the puck managed to beat Massa and bury itself into the net.
Ryan Massa was excellent in goal for the Solar Bears, earning the win after stopping 25 of 27-shots he faced. Anthony Peters made some solid stops but suffers the loss in goal for the Everblades, allowing five goals on 36-shots.
