ESTERO, FL – Missouri’s Sam Povorozniouk scored two goals and added the game-winner in the overtime shootout to lift the Mavericks to 4-3 victory over the Florida Everblades Saturday night at Germain Arena. Despite the loss, the ‘Blades (10-0-1-2) collect another point in the standings and extend their unbeaten streak to thirteen games.
Florida got on the board first when Brant Harris gathered the puck at the low circle and delivered a tough-angled shot behind Mavericks goaltender Josh Robinson to put the ‘Blades on top 1-0.
Missouri evened the score just over a minute later, when Dane Fox fired a shot that was initially stopped by Florida goaltender Anthony Peters. However, Sam Povorozniouk picked up the rebound on the backside of the crease and carved a backhanded shot high into the net for the tally.
The Everblades reclaimed the lead in the second when Brendan O’Donnell led a two-on-rush into the offensive zone. O’Donnell eyed the trailer on the opposite wing, but then called his own number and wristed a shot into the Missouri net to put the score at 2-1 after 40 minutes.
Florida added to its lead in the third, when Matt Berry slid over a pass in front of an outstretched Robinson to O’Donnell. O’Donnell immediately lobbed the puck into the open net to give Florida a 3-1 edge.
Missouri kept battling for the remainder of the third, and received a spark at 13:02 of the period when he directed a shot from the slot that slipped past Peters to pull the Mavericks within one.
At the 17:33 mark, the Mavericks evened the score at three when Povorozniouk fired a slapshot from the blue line that found the back of the net to force overtime.
Neither team sealed the game in the extra session, which forced the game to be decided in the shootout. Once again, Povorozniouk came up big scoring the lone goal in the shootout to seal a 4-3 victory for the Mavericks.
Robinson earned the win in goal making 30 saves, while Peters turned aside 13 of the 16 shots faced in the game.
