ELMIRA, NY – Maxime Clermont made 27 saves, while Andrew Rowe scored twice to lead the Elmira Jackals to a 5-1 victory over the Florida Everblades in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals at First Arena Saturday night. Florida now holds a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series.
Just as they have in each game in the series, the Jackals assembled a quality first period effort. Their hard work paid off as Elmira took the 1-0 lead at 7:49 of the opening frame on a goal by Louie Caporusso. Caporusso received a pass on the left wing circle and hurled a shot that squeezed past the body of goaltender Jesse Deckert and the shortside post for the goal. Elmira outshot the ‘Blades 13-4 in the opening period, and took the 1-0 lead into the first break.
Late in the second, Elmira was on the power play and received a two-man advantage when Florida was tagged with a bench minor penalty for too many men on the ice. On the ensuing 5-on-3, Chaz Johnson one timed a shot from the left wing circle to give the Jackals a 3-0 lead.
Just 23 seconds later, the Elmira’s Jordon Southorn carried the puck from end-to-end and wristed a shot in the slot high past the glove of Deckert to extend the lead to 3-0.
In the final seconds of the period, Jesse Deckert misplayed the puck from the circle and Andrew Rowe grabbed the loose rubber and hurled it toward the open net. Deckert attempted to get back, but the puck had crossed the goaline to give the Jackals a 4-0 lead with 1.7 seconds remaining in the period.
Florida put forth a much better effort in the third, outdshooting the Jackals 17-8 in the final stanza. A.J. Jenks scored his third goal of the postseason on the power play at 12:45 to put the ‘Blades on the board at 4-1.
The Everblades continued to create quality scoring chances but Elmira goaltender Maxime Clermont was solid in goal, and turned aside the remaining shots in the period he faced. Rowe added an empty net goal at the 15:43 mark as the ‘Blades tried to roll the dice to allowing for the extra attacker. Rowe’s second goal of the game sealed the 5-1 victory for the Jackals.
Clermont earns the win stopping 27 of 28 shots faced, while Deckert takes the loss allowing four goals on 28 shots. Brady Hjelle stopped all seven shots faced in the contest in a relief effort. Hjelle started the third period, and made his pro debut in the game.
The heated series now shifts back to Florida on Monday for Game 6 at Germain Arena. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on 96 K-Rock (96.1 FM), or online at www.floridaeverblades.com
