JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Following a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over the Jacksonville Icemen last night, the Florida Everblades have an opportunity to clinch home ice to begin the postseason tonight.
The Everblades stretched their lead atop the South Division standings with last night’s win as both Atlanta and South Carolina were defeated, with the Gladiators falling 4-0 to Greenville and the Stingrays losing by the same score to Orlando. Florida now holds a 10-point lead over Atlanta and an 11-point advantage over South Carolina with six games remaining at 97 points. Jacksonville earned a critical point in the standings with the game decided in overtime and now trail Savannah by 5 points, with seven games left in their season for the final playoff spot in the South.
Florida has tallied power play goals in back-to-back games as Anthony Romano found the back of the net on the man advantage late in the first period. Romano co-leads Florida with 22 goals alongside Craig Needham, and his 54 points are tied for 16th most in the ECHL.
Jacksonville battled back, striking for the next two goals to take their first lead of the night, scoring the lone goal in the second period and converting on a power play of their own early in the third period. Despite featuring the second-best penalty kill this season at 87.4 percent, Florida has struggled recently while shorthanded, surrendering four power play goals over its last five contests, clicking at 77.8 percent during this stretch.
Ross MacDougall answered at the 10:47 mark in the third period to even the score at two. 60 minutes was not enough to decide a winner, sending Florida to overtime for the second consecutive game. Cole Moberg potted the game-winning goal 89 seconds into overtime, helping Florida secure the extra point.
Last night’s overtime triumph improved Florida’s record to 6-6 in games decided in OT while Jacksonville is 4-8 in the same situation. The Everblades are now 12-5-6-2 in one-goal games, while the Icemen are 15-8-8-1. One-goal games have been prominent throughout the season series, with Florida going 3-2 in those games, including a 2-1 mark in overtime.
Cam Johnson was spectacular in goal, stopping 34 of 35 shots in the win as Florida was outshot for just the 12th time this season. Johnson earned his league-leading 28th win of the season and lowered his goals-against average to 1.87, also tops in the ECHL.
The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET from Vystar Veterans Memorial Arena, and the series concludes tomorrow night with another 7 p.m. puck drop.
