Blades Look to Extend Series Lead in Game Two

ESTERO, Fla. – It was a firework display in Game One of the Kelly Cup Finals, in which the Florida Everblades took an 8-1 win over the Kansas City Mavericks. The Blades look to keep up the momentum against the Mavs in Game Two, tonight – June 1– at 8:05 p.m. from Cable Dahmer Arena.

Eight goals ties a Kelly Cup Finals record for goals in a single game, tying three other teams that have matched the feat. However, Florida is the first team to do it in the 21st century, since Charlotte Checkers last posted an eight-spot in 1996. Eight goals is also a team-high this season for the Everblades, surpassing the Jan. 20 mark of seven against the Savannah Ghost Pirates.

This is the first time the Mavericks have been down in a series this postseason after taking care of Tulsa, Idaho and Toledo.

Kansas City’s lone goal in Game One came from Jeremy McKenna, the team’s leading playoff goalscorer. He rifled home his ninth postseason goal, putting him at 18 points total. On the Blades side, Bobo Carpenter, Oliver Chau and Riese Zmolek all notched multi-goal games. Cole Moberg and Logan Lambdin capped the scoring for Florida.

A win tonight would go a long way toward Florida’s hopes of winning back-to-back-to-back Kelly Cups. After Game Two, the series will head to Estero for Games Three, Four and Five if necessary.

BLADES BITS

Ten Everblades registered points, led by the three-point efforts by Bobo Carpenter and Oliver Chau, both of whom were joined by Riese Zmolek with two-goal performances. Eight different players notched assists, including Logan Lambdin who also scored a goal.

The four-goal second period was the second such frame for the Everblades this postseason. In the Jacksonville series, the Everblades tallied all four of their goals in the middle period of the deciding Game Seven win. Along with the three-goal first period, Florida scored three times in one period in Game Two of the second-round series versus Orlando and in Games Three and Game Six of the opening round against Jacksonville.

With his ninth and 10th goals of the playoffs, Bobo Carpenter moved into a tie for the league-lead Kelly Cup Playoffs. Carpenter’s two-goal effort was his third this postseason, while Chau’s two-goal performance was the third of his playoff career, as he posted a pair in the 2023 Kelly Cup Playoffs.
