'Blades Swept Away by Cyclones in Shootout 4-3

Written by Keaton Hanley

ESTERO, FL -- Cincinnati’s Shawn O’Donnell and Justin Danforth each finished with a goal and an assist to lift the Cyclones to a 4-3 overtime shootout win over the Everblades.   Florida does pick up a point in the standings and remain unbeaten in their last four games 3-0-0-1.

BOX SCORE

The Cyclones got on the board first with an early tally just 3:47 into the first period of play, when the Blades had a turnover at the offensive blue line. The Cyclones took the puck on a 2-on-1 and former Everblade Shawn O’Donnell sent a pass from the right circle to Justin Danforth who flipped the puck past Callum Booth’s blocker.

Just 4:35 into the second period of play, the Everblades were able to get their first goal of the night with an eerily similar play to the Cyclones first tally. Matt Berry sent a cross-ice pass over to Stephen MacAulay who drifted for a few seconds before whipping it past the blocker side of Anthony Peters to tie it at one.

The Cyclones stormed back to take their second lead of the game with yet another cross-ice pass for a goal off the stick of Rob De Fulviis after receiving a pass from Dominic Zombo.

Florida was buzzing in the Cyclones defensive zone late in the second period and the Cyclones defense busted under the pressure. With 1:32 left in the period, the puck came to Clark Seymour at the point and he fired it towards the net, that was perfectly tipped by Brett Bulmer, sending the puck under the cross bar right above Peters’ blocker. The goal tied the game at two heading into the second intermission.

The Everblades took their first lead of the game with 12:27 left in the third off of a nice tic-tac-toe play with Sean Robertson sending it D-to-D to Gus Young.  Young was able to send it through the middle of the zone to McCarron at the bottom of the opposite circle, and McCarron wired it past the glove of Peters to make it 3-2 ‘Blades.

Shawn O’Donnell was quick to get the game tied yet again. Shortly after a shot block by a Blades player, the puck took an odd bounce as it rolled backwards along the ice before O’Donnell was able to find the puck and sling it into the net behind Booth.

With neither team able to break the tie the game headed to overtime.

The ‘Blades found themselves on a penalty kill early into the overtime period when Clark Seymour was pinned with a cross-checking penalty, but after multiple blocked shots the Blades were able to kill off the penalty.

With neither team able to score in overtime the two teams went to a shootout. The Cyclones were able to score in the first two rounds of the shootout on goals from Andrew Radjenovic and Jesse Schultz, while the Everblades were unable to convert on either of their first two shots.  As the Cyclones secured the win 4-3 in the shootout.

Callum Booth takes the loss allowing three goals on 31 shots, while Anthony Peters earned the win in his return to Southwest Florida, making 36 stops on 39 shots faced.
