NORTH CHARLESTON, SC – Vitek Vanecek stopped all 21 shots faced to lead the South Carolina Stingrays to a 2-0 shutout victory over the Florida Everblades at the North Charleston Coliseum Tuesday evening.
After a scoreless first, the two teams continued to hold each other in check for a majority of the second period of play.
The Stingrays grabbed the game’s first goal at 16:16 of the middle frame. Max Sauve carried the puck into the offensive zone, but slipped and lost possession. The puck rolled slowly toward the net, and Florida goaltender Anthony Peters attempted to pounce on the puck to draw a whistle. However, Colin Mulvey knocked the puck away with one hand and shuffled it toward the net for the goal.
Mulvey’s goal was the first goal allowed by the Everblades in over seven and a half periods. Up until that point, the last goal scored against Florida was an empty net tally by South Carolina’s Joey Leach at 19:46 of the third period in last Wednesday’s (Oct. 28) game at Germain Arena.
In the third, the Stingray defense and goaltender Vitek Vaneck continued to hold off the Everblades attack, limiting Florida to just five third period shots.
In the final minute, with the net empty, Joey Leach again hurled a shot from his own end into the open net to seal the 2-0 South Carolina victory.
Vancek stopped all 21 shots faced to record his first career shutout, while Peters takes the loss despite a solid outing allowing one goal on 24 shots faced.
