ESTERO, FL – The Florida Everblades scored five unanswered goals to pace past the Wheeling Nailers 5-2 on Saturday evening at Germain Arena.
Wheeling’s Brett Stern put the Nailers on the board at 2:22 of the opening period when his point shot clipped past a screened Anthony Peters for the game’s first goal.
The Nailers extended their lead early in the second, when Riley Brace netted his seventh goal of the season at the 3:43 mark.
The Everblades got on the board at 6:58 of the middle frame when Carter Sandlak picked up his own rebound at the left wing circle and lifted a shot high into the net past Wheeling netminder Brian Foster.
Sandlak helped set up Florida’s second goal when he left the puck just below the blue line for Rob Florentino. Floretino grabbed the puck and raced down the slot and fired a wrist shot that beat Foster for the tying tally.
Florida grabbed its first lead of the game on the power play at 4:31 of the third period. Amidst a wild scramble in front of the Wheeling net, Corey Syvret picked up the loose puck and flipped the puck into the net past an outstretched Foster to put the ‘Blades in top 3-2.
A little more than a minute later, Ethan Werek hurled the puck into the net off a rebound to put the score at 4-2.
Wheeling received a late power play opportunity, and pulled Foster from the net to allow for the extra attacker. However, the 6-on-4 advantage did not pay off as Brant Harris gained possession of the puck and steered it down the ice into the empty net to seal the 5-2 victory. The goal was the seventh scored by Harris in the last seven games.
Peters earned the win stopping 23 of 25 shots, while Foster takes the loss allowing four goals on 42 shots faced in the game.
