'Blades Earn Point in Shootout Loss to Toledo

TOLEDO, OH -- Former Everblade A.J. Jenks scored in the fifth round of the shootout to lift the Toledo Walleye to a 2-1 victory over the Florida Everblades at the Huntington Center Sunday evening. Despite the loss, the Everblades (43-13-2-5, 93 pts) see their win streak end at ten games, but the 'Blades do pick up a point in the standings and hold a five-point lead for the top spot in the division.

After a scoreless but physical first period, the Walleye netted the game's first goal on the power play at 16:55 of the second period.  After two sensational stops by Everblades goaltender Matt Ginn who dove across the crease to stop a shot by Tyler Barnes,  the puck bounced directly to Shane Berschbach at the slot.  Berschbach hurled the puck toward the open net past an outstretched Ginn for the goal to put Toledo on top 1-0.

The Everblades netted the equalizer with a power play goal of their own at 8:42 of the third period.  Matt Marquardt ripped a one-timer from the bottom of the right wing circle behind Toledo netminder Jeff Lerg for the tally.

The two teams slugged it out for the remainder of regulation and overtime, but neither team could score the go-ahead marker which sent the game to the shootout.

Through the first four rounds, Florida received goals from Matt Marquardt and Mitch Wahl, while Toledo received tallies from Troy Schwab and Tyler Barnes.  In the fifth round, Lerg turned aside an attempt by Adam Brace to set up a chance for A.J. Jenks to seal the game.   Jenks wristed a shot past the leg pad of Ginn to secure the 2-1 win for Toledo.

Lerg earns the win allowing one goal on 23 shots faced, while Ginn takes the loss stopping 19 of 20 shots faced.

The Everblades continue the road trip on Wednesday against division rival the Reading Royals.  Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. Fans may listen online at  theislandfm.net
