Estero, FL – The Florida Everblades announced Thursday that the Tampa Bay Lightning, an NHL parent club of the Blades, assigned goalie Riku Helenius to the club from the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League.
Helenius, 25, is a former first round draft pick of the Bolts, having been selected 15th overall in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
A 6’3” native of Palkane, Finland, Helenius appeared in one game earlier this month for the Blades, making 27 saves in a loss at Gwinnett on January 5. He has a lifetime 2.66 GAA in the AHL with a .907 SV%.
With the Finn’s arrival, the Blades now have three goalies on the roster: Helenius, recent AHL assignee Scott Stajcer and former NHL second round draft pick Trevor Cann, who is 8-6-0-0 with the Blades in 15 appearances.
On the ice, the Blades continue their four-game home stand Friday at 7:30pm when they face the in-state rival Orlando Solar Bears at Germain Arena.
