Cann, Blades Stifle Jackals 2-1

Elmira, NY – It was a successful start to the Florida Everblades’ Atlantic Division road trip as goalie Trevor Cann stopped 22 of 23 shots to down the Elmira Jackals 2-1 Wednesday at First Arena.

Florida struck first in Wednesday’s defensive struggle as a Jackals turnover came straight to Trevor Bruess, who took two strides and unleashed a rising slap shot the sailed over the blocker of Elmira netminder Maxime Clermont with 13:23 left in the first period, posting the visitors to a 1-0 lead.

With 7:16 left in the first, the Jackals knotted the game back up at one on a power play rush as forward Jakub Culek deked through the Everblades’ defense and blasted a shot over Cann’s glove and in.

Kyle Bonis appeared to give the Blades the lead with 44 seconds remaining in the opening frame, collecting a back door pass from Rocco Carzo and chipping it over Clermont, but the referees conferred and ruled the net was off before the scoring chance, keeping the game tied 1-1 through 20 minutes.

The Everblades would not be denied, however, and fresh out of a media timeout rookie Will MacDonald struck for his first of the year, posting Florida to a 2-1 lead when he whipped home a Mathieu Roy rebound on a scramble in front of the net with 13:24 to go in the middle frame.

Cann took over from there, stopping the next 11 shots he faced over the next 33-plus minutes to secure his second straight win in net and improve to 2-2-0-0 on the season. Clermont slipped to 2-5-0-1 despite 21 saves.

Now the Blades move on to Pennsylvania for a rematch of the 2013 Eastern Conference Semifinals as they face the defending Kelly Cup champion Reading Royals Friday at 7:05pm at Santander Arena.
